Article summary
The European Parliament has approved a revision of the regulation on the land use, land use change and forestry sector (LULUCF) that aims to increase natural carbon sinks and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The new law will set the EU’s 2030 target for net GHG removals in the LULUCF sector at 310 million tonnes CO2 equivalent, around 15% more than current levels, and reduce EU greenhouse gases in 2030 by up to 57% compared to 1990 levels. All EU Member States will have nationally binding 2030 targets for removals and emissions from LULUCF, and monitoring and reporting requirements will be improved. The text still needs to be formally endorsed by the European Council.
