According to the European Commission, change in energy demand during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has significantly impacted both energy generation and inland energy consumption. While recent Eurostat figures show that energy generation from fossil fuels and nuclear energy continued to decrease during 2020, electricity generation from renewable sources increased, surpassing that from fossil fuels. The EU’s inland consumption of fossil fuels has also significantly decreased. The fall in the consumption of oil and petroleum products ‘stand in vivid contrast the previous years’ trend’ according to the Commission, while natural gas consumption stands as less affected.
