The Health and Social Care Secretary, Rt Hon Sajid Javid, has made a statement updating Parliament on coronavirus (COVID-19) on 13 December 2021. Javid has marked the success of the national vaccination programme but warned that the emergence of the Omicron variant of coronavirus means that there is further work ahead. According to Javid, no variant of coronavirus has spread as fast as the Omicron variant with 4,713 confirmed cases in the UK which is over 20% of cases in England, and it is expected to become the dominant variant in London in the next 48 hours. He has also confirmed that there are currently ten confirmed individuals in England that have been hospitalised with Omicron, but also noted that there is a time lag of two weeks for hospitalisations and deaths against the increased number of cases.
