Article summary

The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has published the outcome of their 2018 consultation on proposed changes to the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) ) in regard to biomass combustion in urban areas. In light of the responses, BEIS will not remove RHI support for new biomass installations in urban areas with access to the gas grid. BEIS has agreed not to impose geographical restrictions on biogas productions and will focus on industry standards as part of their commitment to minimise air quality impacts and promote healthy UK biomass supply chains. BEIS plans to build a fit for purpose fuel quality regime for the 29,000 existing installations and work with the industry and key regulators such as Ofgem to strengthen existing RHI regulations.
