The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced the government’s plan to allocate £1.15m of funding to English businesses and not-for-profits so that they can better educate the public on the reduction of food waste. In the UK, this currently amounts to 4.5 million tonnes per year. Guidance will be given on how to store fresh food, as well as converting waste food into new, edible products. The government has also introduced new grants with the purpose of cutting down on UK food waste by 20%, ideally by 2025.
