The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has announced that funding for round three of the Heat Networks Investment Project (HNIP) has been secured. Four projects have been awarded approximately £25m of funding. This brings the total number of successful schemes to 11. The Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead Council is one of the successful applicants having secured £5.9m of funding. They plan to use geothermal energy from an operational mine water treatment scheme to deliver heat to homes and buildings via the Gateshead District Energy Scheme extension.
