The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) has announced that the 74th meeting of its Standing Committee will be hosted by France from 7–11 March 2022. It is to be the first in-person CITES meeting since August 2019. The deliberations will focus on a number of topics including CITES’ contributions to deforestation and reducing the risk of future zoonotic disease emergence in connection with international wildlife trade, as well as enforcement and reporting matters related to specific species. The deliberations are set to ‘underline the commitment of CITES Parties to contribute to its success by regulating international trade in wild animals and plants so that it is sustainable, legal and traceable’. The 19th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to CITES (known as CoP19) is scheduled to take place in Panama in November 2022.
