The European Commission has adopted an updated guidance on the EU’s regime which governs trade in ivory and amended Regulation (EC) 865/2006 in order to ban most forms of ivory trade in the EU. The guidance recommends that EU Member States suspend the export, re-export and import of raw ivory items, any internal trade in raw ivory (with some exceptions) and restrict the authorisation of import, export or re-export to certain ivory artefacts. It also sets out the international and EU legal framework governing the trade in ivory, EU initiatives against wildlife trafficking which affect internal EU ivory trade and re-export of ivory and how to interpret EU rules.
