Article summary

The Environment Agency (EA) has published a coronavirus (COVID-19) regulatory position statement (RPS) on sampling discharges from water and sewerage company waste water treatment works and water treatment works. This coronavirus RPS is to ensure that regulatory sampling is carried out in accordance with a permit in relation to operator self-monitoring and the Urban Waste Water Treatment (England and Wales) Regulations 1994, SI 1994/2841. This coronavirus RPS only applies if the sample collection or analysis is affected by staff shortages due to coronavirus or restricted access because of people or places being infected or potentially infected with coronavirus. It will expire on 30 April 2021 unless the EA extends it. In addition, written agreement must first be obtained from the EA before this coronavirus RPS can be used.
