Article summary

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a £200m investment into a zero emission road freight demonstrator programme, which could see hundreds more zero-emission heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) rolled out across the UK. The three-year programme will begin later in 2022 and aims to help decarbonise the UK’s freight industry by eliminating fossil fuels from HGV haulage by 2040. An open call competition will be launched for manufacturers, energy providers as well as fleet and infrastructure operators to showcase their green technology on UK roads, beginning with demonstrations of battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell HGVs. In line with this, the DfT has launched a call for evidence on possible exemptions to the 2035 phase out date for the sale of new, non-zero emission HGVs weighing 26 tonnes and under, which may need until 2040 to transition to zero emission technologies. Evidence can be submitted until 11.45 pm on 22 July 2022....
