The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) has announced that the Environment Bill is to resume its passage through Parliament after it was paused due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The Bill aims to introduce legally binding targets for air quality, nature, water and resource and waste efficiency and the creation of a new, independent Office for Environmental Protection (OEP). The OEP's enforcement powers will cover all climate change legislation and hold the government to account on its commitments to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. Ahead of the Bill's return to parliament, a number of amendments have been tabled for consideration including how the OEP should exercise enforcement powers and the creation of Species Conservation Strategies and Protected Site Strategies.
