Article summary

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published its 2019–2020 State of Care report which examined health and social care in England and noted the impact the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had on the quality and delivery of social care. The CQC explained that in social care coronavirus had ‘exacerbated existing problems’ and challenges relating to personal protective equipment, testing and staffing were rife. In addition, the CQC report noted that prior to the onset of the pandemic, care was ‘generally good’, but some areas of concern remained in relation to NHS emergency care, maternity and mental health. The report also highlighted that the pandemic is magnifying inequalities, with the CQC stating that efforts must be put toward shaping a health and care system that delivers for everyone.
