The European Commission has published a report, ‘Shaping the EU’s Climate Transition: Citizens take the floor’, on the views and ideas of European citizens on how to make the climate transition just, shared during deliberative processes that took place between November 2021 and March 2022. The Commission noted citizens’ views that economic incentives and measures that leave rural, older, renters or low-income households worse off as important. Other measures, such as creating a sustainability label for food, were suggestions made by respondents. The Commission found that citizens are willing to commit to a climate transition but need support from the EU institutions to be able to do so, through legislation and financial assistance, fairly for everyone.
