The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has announced the projects developing innovative carbon removal technologies across the UK which will be backed by over £54m in government funding. A total of 15 projects were successful in Phase 2 of the Direct Air Capture and Greenhouse Gas Removal technologies competition, which was initially launched in November 2020 and opened for Phase 2 applications in December 2021. It is hoped that investing into the development of technologies that remove carbon emissions from the atmosphere will help the UK reach its climate change target of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, create new green jobs and establish the UK as a pioneer in this new industry.
