Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Kemi Badenoch, has delivered a speech to the Natural Capital Committee on 3 November 2020. Badenoch stated that a natural capital approach will be essential to achieving the UK’s goals concerning climate change and safeguarding the environment during recovery from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This is because scientific evidence demonstrates that biodiversity loss puts us at greater risk of future pandemics and new ways needs to be sought of driving clean growth so we can build back greener and stronger after the pandemic. Badenoch then discussed economic opportunities which arise from preserving and protecting our natural capital and how the government plans to seize them.
