DBT and DIT publish notice extending anti-dumping duty on aluminium foil from China until 2029

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) and Department for Internal Trade (DIT) has published a public notice confirming the Secretary of State’s decision to accept the Trade Remedies Authority’s (TRA) recommendation to maintain anti-dumping duties on certain aluminium foil in rolls (AFR) originating from the People’s Republic of China (PRC) at existing rates and extend the measure until 6 June 2029. The decision follows a transition review which found that removing the duties would likely lead to recurrence of dumping and injury to UK industry.

Chinese Taipei requests WTO consultations on Canadian steel measures

Chinese Taipei has requested World Trade Organization (WTO) consultations with Canada regarding Canadian measures that impose tariff rate quotas and surtaxes on certain steel imports, as well as a global duty on steel derivative goods. The consultation outlines Chinese Taipei’s claim that these measures are inconsistent with provisions of the GATT 1994 and the Agreement on Import Licensing Procedures. It provides an opportunity for the parties to discuss the matter and seek a mutually satisfactory resolution. If consultations do not resolve the dispute within 60 days, Chinese Taipei may request adjudication by a WTO panel.

Government responds to Independent Review of Windsor Framework, accepting majority of recommendations

The government confirms acceptance of several recommendations aimed at improving democratic scrutiny, engagement, business support and the operation of Northern Ireland’s trading arrangements under Articles 5–10. Key commitments include granting the Democratic Scrutiny Committee (DSC) greater flexibility within the two-month scrutiny period, developing a new policy ‘triage’ process for early identification of EU proposals, enhancing coordination between Whitehall, the Northern Ireland Civil Service and the Northern Ireland Executive and issuing written policy commitments to support timely access to information. The government also intends to continue transparent operation of the Stormont Brake and acknowledges the value of addressing practical concerns raised by MLAs and stakeholders.
