Special school definition

What does Special school mean?

A maintained school which is organised to make educational provision for pupils with special educational needs.

The special school can either be a community or foundation special school. A school can also be a special school and not maintained by the local authority if it has been approved by the Secretary of State. See the Education Act 1996, ss 342, 348.
