GET ACCESS NOWPurdah refers to the period of time running from the date of the announcement of a general election up to the date upon which that election is held. Although this period of time may vary in practice, in the context of a general election it is required to be at least 17 working days from the date on which Parliament is dissolved by the Queen and polling day itself.
Practically, there will also usually be a period of time between the election being announced and the date on which Parliament is dissolved, and this intermittent period of time is known as 'parliamentary wash-up' which the government uses to seek consensus on bills and other matters still in the process of going through the House of Commons. Purdah is also known as the pre-election period and central and local government avoid addressing politically sensitive issues during it.
