What does International application for a patent mean?

An international application for a patent is an application made under the Patent Cooperation Treaty.

A person can apply for a patent under the PCT which allows for the formalities examination, search and publication to be undertaken centrally during the international phase before the application proceeds to substantive examination during the national phase.

A patent for an invention grants the proprietor the right to exclude others from using the invention within a particular jurisdiction for a limited period of time.
