9.4 Licensed hire cars

Licensed hire cars are commonly known as private hire cars. As with licensed taxis, licensed hire cars and their drivers operating in the metropolitan police district and City of London are licensed by Transport for London1, and by the local authority elsewhere2. Licensed hire cars must be hired in advance, and may not ply for hire. Such cars are usually hired as a whole; however, under the Transport Act 1985 such cars may be shared provided that they are booked in advance, and that the passengers consent to sharing the car
