The Society of Pension Professionals (SPP) published a paper, ‘Past Lessons, Future Gains: Examining the case for DB and CDC pension schemes in the modern pensions landscape’, on 25 September 2025 setting out policy ideas for strengthening UK retirement provision in line with the Pensions Commission’s current exploration of pensions adequacy. SPP warns that decades of decline in defined benefit (DB) provision have created a widening gap between those with guaranteed pensions and those without, risking a future adequacy crisis. While acknowledging the success of automatic enrolment (AE) in building defined contribution (DC) savings, the SPP argues that DC alone cannot meet the challenge.
