Public Law analysis: The Special Immigration Appeals Commission (SIAC) has dismissed Shamima Begum’s substantive appeal against the deprivation of her citizenship. This case is notable for its consideration of the relevance of being a trafficking victim to the issue of deprivation of citizenship for natural security reasons. While considering there was a credible suspicion that Begum was trafficked, SIAC found that this did not therefore mean citizenship deprivation was a breach of her rights under Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), nor was it a mandatory relevant consideration which the SSHD had to take into account when considering the issue of citizenship deprivation.
