NEWS
Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) has published a blog updating on their litigation against the Home Office on the difficulties individuals face when proving Section 3C leave. This follows the judgment made by the Court of Appeal which granted the Home Office’s request to pause (or ‘stay’) the requirement to roll out digital status to everyone on section 3C leave straight away. Despite this outcome, RAMFEL highlights that the RAMFEL & Adjei case confirmed that individuals on section 3C leave are entitled to digital proof of their status. RAMFEL advises that although there is a ‘stay’ in place individuals on section 3C leave who are  a experiencing or likely to experience hardship due to the inability to prove their immigration status or rights, such as the right to work or rent, still have the right to request a digital method to prove their status from the Home Office. The Home Office should consider the request, even while they are appealing the judgment.

The Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) has published a report examining living conditions in asylum accommodation and the operation of private sector contracts used to manage hotel housing for asylum seekers. The report draws on evidence from residents and support organisations to assess standards of accommodation, access to essential services and the financial outcomes of current contractual arrangements.

The Refugee and Migrant Forum of Essex and London (RAMFEL) has released a report on the current state of the five refugee family reunion routes entitled ‘Safe Routes to Nowhere: The UK’s Broken Promises on Family Reunion’. The RAMFEL report suggests that the existing process is too complicated, too bureaucratic and the evidentiary burden is too difficult to satisfy. This has led to family members seeking out more irregular and dangerous routes in order to reunite with refugees in the UK. RAMFEL has set out five recommendations in the report which the next government can potentially take to improve the system. These include removing the need to attend Visa Application Centres (VAC) where no VAC is operating in the country of application, expanding the definition of 'family member', looking to approve rather than refuse applications, investing in more decision makers and immediately restoring legal aid for these applications (while the current systems remain in place).
