NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has launched a consultation on its draft 2025 strategy for the safe, secure and sustainable decommissioning of the UK's earliest nuclear sites, as required under the Energy Act 2004. The document outlines the NDA's planned approach to site decommissioning and remediation, integrated waste management, spent fuel handling, and nuclear materials management, among other areas. The NDA aims to complete key objectives by 2050, including retrieving high-hazard radioactive waste from Sellafield, delicensing most former Magnox reactor sites and establishing new waste storage centres. The consultation closes on 29 September 2025.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has launched a consultation on its draft Business Plan for 2025-28, which outlines key activities and expected progress across its 17 nuclear sites over the next three years. The plan also focuses on the expansion of the NDA’s responsibilities, including the decommissioning of the first advanced gas-cooled reactor site transferred from EDF Energy. The consultation closes on 22 April 2025, with the final plan scheduled for publication in June 2025, subject to approval from the UK and Scottish governments.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has published its 2023-24 Annual Report and Accounts, detailing the progress made towards its mission of reducing hazards and decommissioning the UK’s civil nuclear sites. This includes safely decommissioning the NDA’s existing sites and managing radioactive waste for its existing and new nuclear programmes.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has published its 2023-24 socio-economic report, detailing a record investment in projects across the UK and outlining its socio-economic funding commitments. During the 2023-24 financial year, the NDA invested £14.09m in direct socio-economic funding. The report details how and where this money was allocated and invested, including case studies reflecting how the NDA works with communities, stakeholders, and colleagues to maximise its funding. This report follows the NDA’s April 2024 publication of its Social Impact and Communities Strategy.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group has published the consultation outcome for its NDA group Draft Strategy 2025. The consultation ran from 7 July–29 September 2025 and engaged approximately 3000 stakeholders, with 360 respondents. The NDA group states that it intends to publish its final approved Strategy for 2026–2031 at the end of March 2026, including a consultation response report.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has published its 2026–29 Business Plan, following feedback from its December 2025 public consultation. The plan outlines key activities, funding and expected progress across the NDA group’s 17 nuclear sites over the next three years. The NDA notes that requests for more detailed targets, metrics and expenditure breakdowns were considered, but that such information is provided in operating company plans rather than in this document. It also confirms a continued portfolio funding approach, ongoing efforts to improve consultation and stakeholder engagement processes and further engagement where consultees requested a level of detail not considered appropriate for inclusion here.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has published its first Nature Recovery Plan (NRP), outlining how it will protect and enhance biodiversity across its 5,000-hectare estate in England, Wales and Scotland. The plan sets targets through to 2050, including improving Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) conditions to a favourable status by 2042 and contributing towards the Environmental Improvement Plan target for 30% of UK land to be designated as protected by 2030.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has published guidance explaining how waste arising from the final stages of nuclear decommissioning is managed to achieve safe and sustainable outcomes for people, the environment and local communities. The guidance addresses management of large volumes of relatively low-level radioactive waste and conventional waste generated through decommissioning activities, including rubble from demolition, foundations, drains, pipes and soil.
NEWS
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) has published its latest statutory strategy under the Energy Act 2004, setting out a long-term plan for the safe and secure decommissioning of the UK’s legacy nuclear sites through greater group integration, clearer prioritisation and continued focus on the highest-hazard facilities. Developed following extensive public consultation, the strategy confirms ongoing work across four core areas: site decommissioning and remediation, management of spent nuclear fuels, handling of nuclear materials and integrated waste management. It is supported by critical enablers including research and innovation, workforce development, cyber security, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement. The strategy emphasises hazard reduction at Sellafield, consolidation and safe interim storage of fuels and materials, and preparation for long-term disposal primarily through a Geological Disposal Facility. It also outlines the NDA’s wider role in supporting national energy, environmental and defence objectives while maintaining its core decommissioning mission as the priority, and reaffirms commitments to sustainable estate management, socio-economic support for local communities and transparent reporting of progress.
