Arbitration analysis: On 24 January 2014, Argentina’s application for the annulment of an award rendered in 2011 in favour of the Italian company, Impregilo SpA (Impregilo), was rejected resoundingly by an ICSID ad hoc Committee, with the result that the stay of enforcement of the award was automatically terminated in accordance with r 54(3) of the ICSID Arbitration Rules. The Committee’s decision includes a useful consideration of the limited grounds for the annulment of an ICSID award as enshrined in art 52 of the ICSID Convention.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has published a message from its Secretary-General reflecting on the 2024–25 financial year, marking progress in improving the centre’s efficiency, service standards, offerings and outreach. ICSID administered 347 cases and organised over 200 hearings and sessions. It registered 67 new cases—the second highest number recorded in a single fiscal year—and provided services in 14 cases under non-ICSID rules, including the full administration of ten cases under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. ICSID has improved operational efficiency by streamlining administrative processes and surveying arbitrators on procedural tools. The centre also broadened its institutional network by signing coopoeration agreements with Bahrain and Spain and by forging a partnership between the World Bank Group and the International Chamber of Commerce.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) have signed a cooperation agreement in Seoul. The agreement provides for joint conferences, training programmes and capacity-building initiatives for investor-State dispute management. Parties to ICSID proceedings may choose to hold hearings at KCAB's Seoul facilities under Article 63 of the ICSID Convention, with the arrangement extending to proceedings under ICSID's Additional Facility and Mediation Rules.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has announced plans to establish its first staffed office outside Washington DC, in Singapore. This initiative was formalised through a Letter of Intent signed by Singapore’s Minister for Law, Edwin Tong SC and ICSID Secretary-General Martina Polasek during Singapore Convention Week 2025. The new office will serve as ICSID’s regional hub, enhancing its ability to administer cases, deliver training and engage with stakeholders across Asia. It will be located at the World Bank Group Singapore Office, with satellite premises at Maxwell Chambers Suites.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) and the Vienna International Arbitration Centre (VIAC) have jointly signed an agreement to support the use of arbitration, conciliation, mediation, and other dispute resolution methods to resolve international investment disputes. The agreement has established a framework to collaborate on outreach on procedures, exchanging trend and technology information and support for proceedings.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has announced that the Republic of Equatorial Guinea has deposited its Instrument of Ratification of the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States (the ICSID Convention) with the World Bank. The ICSID Convention aims to establish an institutional and legal framework for foreign investment dispute settlement and will enter into force for Equatorial Guinea on 23 August 2024.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has announced that Honduras has signed the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of Other States. With this signing, Honduras becomes the 166th signatory to the ICSID Convention and, upon ratification, will become a Member State with access to arbitration and conciliation services for resolving investment disputes between the Honduran government and foreign investors.
