The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published its onshore wind strategy, detailing how the UK government plans to scale up the deployment of onshore wind to support its 2030 clean power targets. The strategy sets out 42 government commitments aimed at removing barriers to onshore wind deployment and serves as the primary output from the Onshore Wind Taskforce, which was established in July 2024 and has since disbanded.

The consultation sought views on innovations capable of enhancing security of supply but not currently recognised as a Generating Technology Class. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published the first part of its response to consultation on refinements for Contracts for Difference Allocation Round 8, announcing amendments to the Contracts for Difference (Allocation) Regulations 2014, SI 2014/2011. The response addresses the legislative proposals set out in Chapter 5 of the December 2025 consultation, which focused on improving scheme efficiency and administrative robustness, and confirms that the National Energy System Operator (NESO) will be able to correct certain administrative errors made during the assessment of CfD applications, including by issuing new or amended non‑qualification determination notices and applying a pause to the allocation process for affected projects only in order to accommodate additional Tier 1 appeals. DESNZ also confirms that the SI 2014/2014 will be amended to allow NESO, in specified circumstances, to consider new documentary evidence or information at the Tier 1 review stage to rectify non‑material errors or omissions, with the scope of acceptable evidence and applicable error types to be set out in the Contract Allocation Framework (CAF), alongside further administrative rules.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a policy statement outlining the government’s approach to how the National Energy System Operator (NESO) is envisaged to carry out strategic planning for hydrogen infrastructure. The statement clarifies government policy aims for NESO as it develops its hydrogen strategic planning capabilities, including NESO’s activities in delivering hydrogen strategic planning, how the government will consider NESO’s outputs and NESO’s development of other relevant hydrogen-related products. It follows the December 2023 Hydrogen Transport and Storage Networks Pathway, which confirmed that NESO would lead strategic network planning for hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure, with the government acting as interim strategic planner. The statement also explains how DESNZ will consider NESO’s hydrogen strategic planning when developing policy in relation to its hydrogen business models. While NESO will produce the first tangible outputs of its hydrogen strategic planning role in 2026, DESNZ will continue to have an ongoing role in the process as the decision maker for awarding business model support to hydrogen infrastructure projects.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a policy update on Great Britain’s midstream gas system, outlining the government’s direction for the future of the gas system, as part of the UK’s transition to a secure, affordable, and net zero energy system. The update sets out the government’s understanding of key challenges and the measures being implemented to ensure the transition is fair, resilient and cost-effective. It identifies three main challenges, including: (1) maintaining the resilience of gas supply and infrastructure as UK Continental Shelf production declines and reliance on alternative sources increases; (2) balancing infrastructure investment with affordability to ensure a safe and reliable network; and (3) managing a planned and orderly operational transition as parts of the gas network are either repurposed or decommissioned.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a progress report on the UK Net Zero Research and Innovation Framework Delivery Plan for 2022–25, detailing how government departments and the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets invested approximately £4.2bn to accelerate technologies critical for achieving net zero. The Framework, introduced in 2021, identified seven priority areas: power, industry and low-carbon hydrogen, carbon capture and greenhouse gas removal, heat and buildings, transport, natural resources and waste, and whole-systems approaches. Programmes delivered under the plan have advanced technology readiness by an average of two levels, generated over 340 patents, leveraged significant private sector co-investment, and are estimated to support more than 71,000 jobs.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a progress review on the implementation of the recommendations from the 2022 Post Implementation Review of the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR). The review reflects the ONR’s progress over the past two years, notably during a period of increasing pace across civil and defence nuclear sites in the UK. It highlighted that the ONR has made significant progress against the 19 recommendations from the Post Implementation Review, and all of them can now be closed. The review was conducted by the DESNZ, in conjunction with the Department for Work and Pensions and the ONR.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published provisional estimates of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions for 2024. The report indicates that total emissions were 371 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, representing a 4% decrease from 2023 and a 54% reduction compared to 1990 levels. The electricity supply sector saw the largest reduction in emissions (15%), driven by increased electricity imports and renewable generation, which reduced gas and coal usage in power stations. Domestic transport remained the highest emitting sector, accounting for 30% of total emissions in 2024. UK-based international aviation bunker emissions increased by 9%. The industry sector saw a 9% decrease in emissions, primarily due to the closure of blast furnaces in the iron and steel industry and decreased coal usage. Emissions from the buildings and product uses sector increased by 2%, attributed to higher gas consumption.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has released the provisional UK territorial greenhouse gas (GHG) emission statistics for 2023. According to the report, UK territorial GHG emissions amount to 384.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, which is 5.4% less than the 2022 figure. The report further shows that carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by 6.6%, GHG emissions from electricity supply fell by 19.6% and emissions from buildings and products uses were also reduced by 6.2%. These results can be linked to a number of factors, including higher electricity imports from France and high energy prices leading to reduced gas use for heating buildings. In addition, the report shows that the UK's primary source of emissions, accounting for 29.1% in 2023, is still domestic transportation, however emissions of GHG have decreased by 52.7% since 1990.

The template is intended for use by waste operators when submitting quarterly data reports to their regulator during the voluntary monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) period.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has published a report, detailing a high-level summary of the performance of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS) in 2023, its third year of operation. The report provides an overview of the UK ETS infrastructure, participant data for installations and aviation, market dynamics, and compliance statistics. It also covers the supply and free allocation of UK Allowances (UKAs), auction results, as well as the implementation of the Cost Containment Mechanism. In addition, the report addresses the UK ETS Registry’s role in tracking UKAs and transactions, highlighting that 681 installations and 387 aircraft operators had obligations to surrender UKAs in 2023.
