The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence as part of an independent review, chaired by Dr Alan Whitehead, to examine how greenhouse gas removal (GGR) technologies can support the UK’s 2050 net zero targets. Stakeholders are invited to submit evidence on: (1) the potential scale of emissions savings; (2) opportunities and barriers to deploying GGRs at scale; (3) the economic costs associated with GGR deployment; (4) strategies for transitioning from public to private investment; (5) the role of GGRs in advancing government missions; (6) options for balancing the UK’s residual emissions; and (7) how GGRs could contribute to the UK’s security of supply. The call for evidence closes on 20 June 2025, with the review’s findings expected to be published in autumn 2025.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence seeking views on the deployment of non-pipeline transport (NPT) and cross-border CO2 networks. DESNZ has emphasised the importance of carbon capture in a press release, noting that the Climate Change Committee described ‘the technology as a necessity for meeting net zero targets.’ DESNZ has asserted that improving understanding of industry views surrounding carbon capture, usage and storage is key to the implementation of widespread carbon capture by 2035. The call for evidence closes on 16 July 2024.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence on nuclear third party liability (NTPL) limits for small modular reactors (SMRs) and advanced modular reactors (AMRs). It seeks views on whether default liability limits, rising to €1.2billion in 2027, are appropriate and proportionate, or whether alternative approaches should apply to advanced nuclear technologies (ANTs), including for electricity generation, heat, hydrogen production and other end uses. The call for evidence closes on 1 June 2026.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched an in-depth review of Ofgem, launching a call for evidence to seek feedback on Ofgem's role in supporting an innovative energy market that benefits consumers. The review will examine Ofgem’s mandate, consumer protection powers, its scope and remit, standard-setting processes, and redress mechanisms.  Key proposals include shortening complaint response times, strengthening the energy ombudsman, and expanding automatic compensation schemes. The review will also consider Ofgem's role in approving infrastructure projects. Ofgem has welcomed DESNZ's review, viewing it as an opportunity to explore new regulatory approaches, potentially including powers similar to those of the Financial Conduct Authority. The call for evidence closes on 28 February 2025.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence to inform the development of a future strategy for the UK downstream oil sector. The exercise seeks views from industry, academics and other stakeholders on the current and future role of refineries and the wider downstream oil sector in supporting energy security, economic growth and the transition to net zero. Responses are invited by 11:59pm on 20 April 2026.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence, seeking views on innovative hydrogen-to-power (H2P) projects that can be rapidly deployed by 2030, ahead of large-scale hydrogen infrastructure development. The consultation aims to gather technical information on the scope of planned projects, timelines, costs, and potential barriers. The call for evidence closes on 12 May 2025.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence, seeking views on proposals to mandate solar canopy installations on new outdoor car parks (section 1), and on current planning policy and permitted development rights related to electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure (section 2). The call for evidence also explores opportunities to deploy solar canopies on existing car parks above a certain size, including those under public and private ownership. Subject to the evidence received, DESNZ may consider expanding the proposals in section 1 to include multi-storey and residential car parks. The call for evidence also invites suggestions on further government actions to increase solar canopy deployment on outdoor car parks, and on updates to planning and permitting processes to facilitate the installation of EV charging points. The call for evidence closes on 18 June 2025.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a call for evidence seeking views on the technical and commercial aspects of electrolyser flexibility. DESNZ is seeking evidence on how flexible operation of electrolysers can be delivered technologically and commercially from the perspective of both hydrogen producers and end users. It is also seeking to understand the potential impacts of flexible hydrogen production and supply on offtakers. The evidence gathered will be used to assess the technological and commercial feasibility of flexible electrolyser operation and to inform future policy development. The call for evidence closes on 6 July 2026.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a consultation on the Capacity Market (CM), seeking views on proposed changes aimed at ensuring sufficient flexible capacity, bolstering security of supply, and facilitating the decarbonisation of unabated gas. Simultaneously, the DESNZ is conducting a call for evidence on proposals to maintain security of supply and enable the flexible capacity to decarbonise. The consultation and call for evidence closes on 10 December 2024. In addition, the DESNZ has published an updated response to its October 2023 consultation on phase two reforms and the ten year review of the 2023 CM.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a consultation on proposed amendments to the Contracts for Difference (CfD) Standard Terms and Conditions (STCs) to implement Clean Industry Bonus (CIB) reforms for Allocation Round 8 (AR8), following the 2025 consultation and government response. The consultation does not introduce new policy but sets out proposed contractual changes required to implement previously confirmed reforms, including project-level bids, the addition of skills and workforce protection to CIB minimum standards, and payment on delivery. The consultation closes on 1 April 2026.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a consultation on strengthening Energy Ombudsman (EO) powers. The consultation will focus on complaints from domestic energy suppliers, small enterprise complaints against non-domestic suppliers and heat network complaints. However, electricity and gas networks and third-party intermediaries will be subject to separate consultation processes. The proposals include reducing the escalation period for complaints from eight to four weeks, enabling automatic compensation where EO rulings are not implemented promptly, and providing statutory designation for the EO. DESNZ has also announced that Ofgem will regulate third-party intermediaries including energy brokers and price comparison sites, which have previously operated without regulatory oversight. Additional measures include standardising smart meter installation contracts for businesses and public sector organisations, intended to deliver £200m in energy savings. The consultation closes on 4 December 2025.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has launched a consultation, seeking stakeholder views on managing the transition of North Sea energy production. The consultation aims to develop a framework that supports the government's commitment to cease the issuance of new field exploration licences, including all new seaward exploration and production licences to search for and extract new oil and gas resources in the UK, while maintaining existing licences and collaborating with businesses and workers to manage existing fields for the entirety of their lifespan. It also details the government’s commitment to ending new onshore oil and gas exploration and production licences in England. Additionally, the consultation proposes changes to the role of the North Sea Transition Authority, ensuring it has the necessary regulatory framework to support the government's long-term vision for the North Sea and facilitate the transition to clean energy. It is directed at various stakeholders, such as oil and gas producers, the renewable energy sector, and environmental groups, among others. The consultation closes on 30 April 2025.
