The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced plans to publish a comprehensive Energy Resilience Strategy next year to strengthen Britain’s energy system against risks such as climate change, cyber threats, and geopolitical tensions. The strategy follows the North Hyde substation fire in March 2025, which prompted an independent investigation by the National Energy System Operator (NESO). NESO’s review identified the likely cause and issued 12 recommendations, all of which are being implemented through enhanced maintenance standards, improved fire safety processes, and stronger collaboration between operators and emergency services. A new Energy Resilience and Security Taskforce will oversee delivery, while the strategy will set priorities for safeguarding critical infrastructure and align with wider government resilience commitments. Ofgem has also launched an enforcement investigation into National Grid Electricity Transmission regarding maintenance compliance at North Hyde.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that the Great British Energy (GBE) Bill has passed through Parliament, with legislative consent from all three devolved governments. The Bill establishes GBE, a new publicly owned energy company backed by £8.3bn in government funding over the current parliamentary term. GBE will invest in clean energy projects across the UK, including: £200m for new rooftop solar power and renewable energy schemes for schools, hospitals, and communities; £4m for Scottish community energy projects; and £3m for local renewable projects in Wales. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, Ed Miliband, is expected to set out GBE’s strategic priorities, including the technologies it will focus on and how public benefit will be factored into its investment decisions.

This meeting addressed efforts to expand solar energy initiatives, including establishing ethical, resilient, and innovative supply chains and ensuring a skilled and resourced workforce to scale up solar installations across the UK. The taskforce has also committed to delivering an updated solar roadmap in the coming months. This meeting follows plans announced in July 2024 for a ‘solar rooftop revolution’ that will equip millions of homes with solar panels. Over the past few months, the government has also authorised two gigawatts of nationally significant solar power, surpassing the total from the previous 14 years combined.

The Department for Energy, Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced UK’s withdrawal from the Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) after failed efforts to align it with net zero. After two years of negotiations, the UK assisted in mediating a deal to modernise the ECT in 2022, to have extended protections to renewable energy sources like carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) and hydrogen, maintaining its present benefits while promoting the shift to cleaner energy. However, nine European Union members rejected the updated ECT, which was due to be approved in November 2022. The ECT was intended to encourage foreign investment in the energy sector and protect fossil fuel investors. The withdrawal is said to support the UK's transition to net zero and bolster its energy security.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced a package of measures aimed at strengthening and accelerating efforts to improve national energy security in response to events in the Middle East. DESNZ has confirmed that the UK will introduce ‘plug-in solar’ for the first time in the UK. DESNZ intends to bring forward the next annual renewables auction to July 2026 and confirmed that the government will implement the recommendations of the Fingleton Review to help accelerate the construction of nuclear power stations. It also confirmed that it has taken steps to protect consumers by working with the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to prevent unfair practices, such as price gouging.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that the UK has signed an agreement with European partners to cooperate on the development of offshore wind projects in the North Sea. The agreement, known as the Hamburg Declaration, was signed at the Future of the North Seas Summit held in Hamburg. It commits North Sea countries to delivering 100 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity through joint clean energy projects. Participating countries include Germany, Norway, France, Denmark, Belgium, Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

The amendment to clause 3 adds measures against slavery and human trafficking to GB Energy's core activities, alongside its existing clean energy and emissions reduction objectives. The legislation builds upon the Procurement Act 2023, which allows public bodies to reject bids from suppliers using forced labour. GB Energy will appoint a senior leader focused on ethical supply chains and modern slavery, while working with the Solar Stewardship Initiative (SSI) to ensure supply chain compliance.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that Eni has finalised a £2bn deal for the Liverpool Bay Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project spanning north Wales and north west England. The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has awarded three carbon storage permits to Eni for the project. The development forms part of the government's £21.7bn commitment to establish a CCS industry, following the East Coast Cluster project approved in December 2024. The project aims to create 2,000 construction jobs and will establish infrastructure to decarbonise industries including waste management, hydrogen and cement production. Additionally, the government has announced planning reforms intended to streamline approval processes for clean power projects including solar, wind and nuclear installations.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that billpayers will benefit from an average of £150 off the costs of energy bills from April 2026 by ending funding for the Energy Company Obligation scheme and removing 75% of costs for the Renewables Obligation scheme from bills. As a result, Ofgem has confirmed the energy price cap will fall by 7%, meaning the typical dual fuel household will see a £117 reduction, with savings automatically applied from 1 April 2026 depending on usage and tariff type.

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced that applications for the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES) Round 10 closed on 19 September 2025, with details of Round 11 expected to be published shortly. The HNES is a £77m grant support programme running from 2023–24 to 2027–28, which provides funding to public, private and third sector applicants in England and Wales to improve the performance of existing district heating or communal heating projects operating sub-optimally.
