Ofcom has announced that the Secretary of State of Culture, Media and Sport has made Commencement Regulations to bring Part 5 of the Media Act 2024 (MA 2024), alongside a section of Part 1, into force. This will enable Ofcom to commence preparatory work on its public service broadcasting reform. MA 2024, Pt 5 contains various provisions on how commercial radio is regulated and allows Ofcom to progress its plans for implementation. These plans include a consultation on new local news and information requirements for analogue commercial radio stations, consultation on new requirements on digital audio broadcasting (DAB) multiplex providers, ending the requirement for DAB multiplex providers to seek permission from Ofcom to add or remove digital radio stations and removing requirements from analogue licences relating music and locally-made programming.
