The Ministry of Justice has announced that £70m will be invested in accommodation to support prison leavers. Without a place to stay once released from prison, 50% of offenders are ‘more likely to break the law again’. The establishment of temporary basic accommodation for up to 12 weeks in five National Probation Service regions will support around 3,000 prison leavers in the first year. Another part of the funding will serve to build new spaces in Approved Premises, which ‘allow probation staff to closely monitor and support the highest-risk offenders in the community’.
