Ofgem has launched a consultation on the initial findings of the Electricity Transmission (ET) Network Planning Review aimed at ensuring the efficient delivery of net zero at the lowest cost to consumers. This consultation sets out the objectives for efficient ET network planning which includes, among other things, ensuring that the onshore and offshore ET networks are planned holistically together with potential interconnection, and the proactive identification and progression of low regret ‘strategic investments’ (SI) in the ET network which are crucial to delivering the net zero target along with the government’s plans to decarbonise the UK power system by 2035. Ofgem proposes that the Electricity System Operator (ESO) should develop ‘transitional’ ET network planning arrangements to apply from next year.
