The Local Government Association (LGA) has responded to a report from the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) on the financial risks councils are facing due to coronavirus (COVID-19). The Chair of the LGAs Resources Board, Richard Watts, responded saying that councils now need further funding and financial flexibilities to meet an estimated £6bn shortfall in funding this year. The LGA urged the government to bring forward details of plans to financially support councils so that councils can avoid taking extreme measures to cope with funding shortfalls and to meet their legal duty to balance their budgets.
