Article summary
Highways England has announced its new roadmap to net zero that will see it aim to rapidly cut carbon from road construction, maintenance and operations, and support the transition to zero emission vehicles. It plans to achieve this by ’putting roads at the heart of Britain’s net zero future’ through three key commitments; achieving net zero for its own operations by 2030, delivering net zero road maintenance and construction by 2040; and supporting net zero carbon travel on our roads by 2050. Contractors and suppliers used by Highways England will also be required to act in order to conform with the net zero maintenance and construction 2040 goal. This plan supports the UK government’s transport decarbonisation plan that was announced on 15 July 2021, as well as the targets of the Paris Agreement.
