The Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs has announced that the UK government and the Environment Agency (EA) will invest £25m in projects that use nature to protect communities from flooding as part of the natural flood management (NFM) programme. The funding will help utilise the power of nature and support the EA’s National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) Strategy, which provides a longer-term vision of how the government will create climate-resilient places and protect and prepare homes and businesses from flooding and coastal change. The funding also aims to minimise local flood risk using NFM, offer wider benefits to the environment, nature and society, boost new and existing opportunities for NFM delivery and financing, and enhance evidence of NFM by filling knowledge gaps further. Environmental non-governmental organisations, businesses, farmers, catchment partnerships, flood risk management authorities and community groups are eligible to apply for the programme.
