Article summary
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the EU Member States have recommended that 34 bisphenols be restricted as a result of their potential hormonal or reprotoxic effects. As these bisphenols are widely used, a group restriction has been determined as the best way to manage their risk, although the ECHA notes that the number of restricted bisphenols may change as more data is gathered. In addition, the ECHA has confirmed that three bisphenols have already been identified as substances of very high concern and such identification or harmonised classification and labelling is proposed for further bisphenols where sufficient information on hazards is already available.
