The Secretary of State for Education, Gavin Williamson, has expanded on the proposal to reopen some schools from 1 June 2020 after closure due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Gavin Williamson told the House of Commons that, as the UK should now be past the peak of the virus, the government has laid out a phased return for children in ‘key transition years’. From 1 June 2020, primary schools may begin to accept reception, year one and year six children, whereas secondary schools and colleges should give ‘face-to-face support’ for years ten and 12. Measures to protect pupils include restricting class sizes, attempting to limit mixing and testing symptomatic students.
