Terrorism Act 2006 (2006 c 11)

The Terrorism Act 2006 was enacted in response to the heightened terrorist threats following the July 2005 London bombings. It introduced new offences, including the encouragement of terrorism and the dissemination of terrorist publications. The Act gave law enforcement authorities extended powers to detain individuals suspected of terrorism-related activities for up to 28 days without charge, subject to judicial review. Additionally, it imposed stricter controls on the glorification of terrorism and facilitated the prosecution of those providing or receiving training for terrorist purposes. The legislation aimed to enhance the UK's counter-terrorism framework by addressing emerging threats and modes of extremist behaviour.
