What does Summary Sheriff mean?

A judicial office created by Courts Reform (Scotland) Act 2014 following Scottish Civil Courts Review, which reported in 2009.

The office of Summary Sheriff is created by Courts Reform (Scotland) Act 2014, s 5. Appointment is by Her Majesty the Queen on the recommendation of the Scottish First Minister, who must consult the Lord President. For civil and criminal jurisdiction of Summary Sheriffs see ss 44 and 45 of Courts Reform (Scotland) Act 2014. Section 129 of this Act states that a Summary Sheriff may constitute, and exercise the jurisdiction and powers of any Justice of the Peace Court.
