Muirburn definition

What does Muirburn mean?

The act of setting fire to ground that is heath or muir for the purposes of good land management.

Making muirburn is regulated by Hill Farming Act 1946, ss 23 - 27. It is allowed during a specified period (the "standard muirburn season") under Hill Farming Act 1946 c 73, s 23(1) or under licence Hill Farming Act 1946 c 73, s 23C. The period may be extended, or varied by order Hill Farming Act 1946 c 73, s 23A.
