Greater London Authority definition

What does Greater London Authority mean?

The authority for the Greater London area, established on 3 July 2000 under the Greater London Authority Act 1999.

The Greater London Authority (GLA) consists of an elected mayor, who has an executive decision-making role, and a separately-elected London Assembly of 25 members. The GLA's three main areas of responsibility are economic development and wealth creation, social development and environmental improvement. It has four functional bodies, which are responsible for carrying out certain aspects of the Authority's work: Transport for London; the London Development Agency; the Metropolitan Police Authority; and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority.
