What does European Banking Authority mean?

The EBA is a regulatory agency which is composed of high level national authorities responsible for the supervision of credit institutions.

The EBA was established as a reaction to the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007-2008 as one of the European Supervisory Authorities by Regulation 1093/2010 in 2011. It took over all existing and ongoing tasks and responsibilities from the Committee of European Banking Supervisors (CEBS) by 1 January 2011. Its main tasks are to take part in the establishment of high-quality common regulatory and supervisory standards and practices; to contribute to the consistent application of the Union legislation; to strengthen international supervisory coordination; and to settle disagreements between national supervisory authorities regarding the application of EU regulations.
