GET ACCESS NOWSubject to certain exemptions, an operator requires an Environmental Permit in order to operate a regulated facility, such as a waste management facility, or to discharge to surface water or foul water, or to abstract water from controlled waters.
The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010, SI 2010/675 have consolidated the existing permitting systems in the UK to produce a single regulatory framework. It is the operator's responsibility to apply to the regulator for a permit, and this permit will usually be granted subject to conditions. The Environment Agency regulates waste operations, water discharge operations, radioactive substances activities and the potentially more polluting Regulated Facilities (Part A1 installations, regulation of which is often still referred to as Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC)). Local authorities regulate Part A2 Regulated Facilities (Local Authority Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control, or LA-IPPC) and the less polluting (Part B) Regulated Facilities (Local Authority Pollution Prevent and Control (LAPPC)).
