GLOSSARY

Community governance review definition

What does Community governance review mean?

A review of all or part of a principal council's area for the purpose of making specified recommendations about local community governance (see section 79 and generally Part 4 of the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007).

The recommendations in question include: the constitution of a new parish; any review of existing parishes; recommendations concerning requisite electoral arrangements and the grouping or de-grouping of parishes. A principal council may undertake a review of its own motion (section 82) or following a valid community governance petition, compliant with section 80, to which the Council has a duty to respond as specified. Guidance on community governance reviews was issued in March 2010 by the Department for Communities and Local Government and the Local Government Boundary Commission for England.
