Aliment definition

What does Aliment mean?

Financial support for a spouse or civil partner or child that can be enforced by law.

Aliment is an obligation owed by a husband to a wife, a wife to a husband, by one civil partner to the other, by a mother or father to his or her child (or a child accepted as a child of his or her family) that ends if there is a divorce or dissolution of a civil partnership. After divorce there may be a continuing obligation of financial support which is called periodical allowance.
