ABWR definition

What does ABWR mean?

Advanced Boiling Water Reactor: The latest design of one of the most common types of BWR. The UK ABWR is a generation III+ reactor being developed and offered by Hitachi GE Nuclear Energy as part of the Horizon project at Wylfa. For more information see http://www.hitachi-hgne-uk-abwr.co.uk/.

Nuclear Power Generation policy-statement-'>National Policy Statement Brexit impact—Euratom and the UK Nuclear Sector As of 31 January 2020 (exit day), the UK ceased to be an EU Member State. However, at this point in time, the UK entered a transition/implementation period during which it continued to be treated by the EU as a Member State for many purposes. The UK’s exit from the EU also meant the UK’s exit from the Euratom Community. 11pm (GMT) on 31 December 2020 marked the end of the Brexit transition/implementation period. At this point in time (referred to in UK law as ‘IP completion day’), key transitional arrangements come to an end and significant changes begin to take effect across the UK’s legal regime. The UK’s exit from the EU also meant the UK’s exit from Euratom. Any changes relevant to this content will be set out below. On 24 December 2020, the UK government announced it had agreed the EU-UK Trade and Co-operation Agreement (TCA), which is supplemented by a number of associated declarations and agreements including a separate Nuclear Co-operation Agreement (NCA) with the EU/Euratom. The planning regime for nuclear new build in England and Wales This Practice Note focuses on the planning regime for new nuclear build facilities. It covers the policy basis for the consenting of new nuclear plants, the appeal and judicial review processes and the implications for the nuclear planning regime of the UK’s exit from the EU. Planning policy Energy National Policy Statements The government's policy on major infrastructure projects is set out in a series of National Policy Statements (NPSs)—statutory documents published in accordance with the Planning Act 2008 (PA 2008). NPSs provide a framework for the Secretary of State when considering development consent applications for energy infrastructure projects of national significance. Between late 2009 and early 2010, the government published and consulted on six draft NPSs. These included: • an overarching Energy NPS (EN-1), and • an NPS that sets out specific issues in relation to applications for development consent orders (DCOs) for new nuclear power stations (EN-6) The NPS documents were subjected to parliamentary scrutiny and the government consolidated the consultation responses. The regulatory justification process for proposed new nuclear power stations in the UK Before a nuclear power station can be built, its design must be assessed to find out if the social, economic or other benefits outweigh the health risks or other detriments associated with ionising radiation. In the renewables sector this week Ofgem has published draft guidance regarding the administration of the closure of the Renewables Obligation to new capacity and the European Commission has proposed a new Renewable Energy Directive to include an extension of sustainability criteria to cover solid biomass and in the area of smart metering the government is to lay Smart Energy Code amendments before Parliament and has announced that the government will proceed with removing the Early Rollout Obligation. We include updates on new and existing consultations published by BEIS, Ofgem, the NDA and EA as well as updates on recently published judgments of interest, details of new and updated content within Lexis®PSL Environment and updates from other practice areas which may be of interest to energy lawyers.
