A. Introduction to Continuous Employment
The period of an employee's continuous employment is important for several of the principal statutory rights conferred by the Employment Rights Act 1996, in two principal ways. Firstly, continuous service provides a gateway to certain rights; most commonly, because of a particular period of required continuous employment as at the date when the question of the existence of the right is determined. Secondly, continuous service affects the scope of certain rights conferred in this way (for example, the number of weeks' pay comprised in a statutory redundancy payment or basic award for unfair
