Although the individual contract of employment is the starting point for determining rights and duties in relation to pay, there are in addition a number of statutory payments to which employees (and in some cases workers) may be entitled during the course of the employment relationship and no discussion of pay would be complete without reference to them. Many of these statutory payments are designed to ensure that there is a significant element of pay protection where the employee exercises a statutory right to take time off work (eg to act as an employee representative or as a pension scheme trustee).
