1.1 Building Societies Act 1986

Before the coming into force of the Financial Services and Markets Act 20001 building societies were governed almost entirely by the Building Societies Act 1986 (as subsequently amended)2. A building society means a society incorporated (or deemed to be incorporated) under the Building Societies Act 19863.
