Article summary

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced the launch of new 'sobriety tags' aimed at tackling alcohol-fuelled crime. The tags work by monitoring offenders' sweat every 30 minutes and alerting the probation service if alcohol is consumed. In addition, courts have been given new powers to issue drinking bans for up to 120 days if the alcohol ban is not complied with. From 21 October 2020, criminals in Wales who commit alcohol related crimes may be ordered by a judge to wear a sobriety tag. The tags will be extended to England from early 2021.
