Trans-European Networks definition

Published by a LexisNexis EU Law expert

What does Trans-European Networks mean?

Trans-European Networks (TENs) are intended to provide the infrastructure to support the creation of an EU single market. Based on the EU Treaty the EU works to interlink the most important regional and national networks in the transport, energy and telecommunications sectors.

The treaty of the Functioning of the EU (articles 170, 171 and 172) provides for the EU to aim at promoting the development of Trans-European Networks to support the creation of an EU Single Market and to inforce economic and social cohesion. The EU is financing TEN projects through specific TEN programmes, the Cohesion Fund, European Regional Development Fund and with loans from the European investment Bank. The projects stimulate the connections of EU energy, transport and telecommunication networks beyond regional and national structures and grids.
